Who Will Win in This Weekend’s NFL Playoffs?
The NFL Playoffs continue this weekend, with the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons all having home field advantage. After this, the AFC and NFC Championships will happen, and then we’ll get to watch Super Bowl 2011 online on February 6.
Possible upsets could happen for the visiting Baltimore Ravens and Green Bay Packers, but are less likely for the Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who will host the Baltimore Ravens, is the only home playoff team that posts better offensive and defensive statistics while playing at home. Offensively, they gain 2.5% more yards per pass attempt and 9.3% more yards per rush. Defensively, they decrease the quarterback sack percentage by 11.4% and allow 9.8% fewer points at home.

Atlanta’s quarterback Matt Ryan has a 20-2 home record and this season only lost one home game. He completes 13.1% more passes and gets sacked less while playing in Atlanta. The Falcons also score 7.2% more points at home and their defense gives up 6.5% fewer points per game. They will host the Green Bay Packers, the second best road team in the playoffs.
The Packers have outscored their road opponents by 3.5 points per game, giving them a chance to beat the Falcons.
The Chicago Bears, the worst home team in the playoffs, have been outscored by .5 points per game at home. Luckily, they are hosting a terrible road team, the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle has been outscored by 12.5 points per game on the road and scored 30.3% fewer points. Seattle, who beat Chicago earlier this season, is not predicted to win again.
The final NFL playoff game will be the New England Patriots hosting the New York Jets, who have been given the least likely chance for an upset. New England is predicted to win, as the Patriots complete more yards, pass completions and touchdowns while at home. At the same time they decrease opponent interceptions and sacks.
The Jets have one advantage in that they do play better on the road offensively, scoring 16.3% more points than when playing at home.
